Why should I train my forklift operators?

Most importantly, to provide the safest workplace possible.  To minimize losses related to forklift accidents.  And, because IT IS THE LAW!Forklift Instructor Development Courese

Who should receive forklift training?

Prior to operating a forklift in the workplace each operator must receive classroom and practical instruction to evaluate their competency and ability to operate a powered industrial truck safely.

Must I use a certified trainer to train my operators?

No.  in Indonesia does not have regulation that require trainers to have a certification  The truth is there are no government or private sector individuals or organizations that have been approved or endorsed by Department of Transportation  to train instructors and then issue trainer certifications.

What types of forklift training does you require?

Training must consist of both classroom-type and practical, hands-on, instruction in proper operation of the vehicle, possible hazards, and other specific requirements contained in the rule. These include things such as operating instructions, engine and motor operation, and vehicle stability.

  • lecture,

  • discussion,

  • interactive computer learning,

  • videotapes, and

  • written materials

  • demonstrations performed by the trainer

  • exercises performed by the trainee

TRUCK-RELATED TOPICS

  • Operating instructions, warnings, and precautions for the types of truck the operator will be authorized to operate;

  • Differences between the truck and the automobile;

  • Truck controls and instrumentation: where they are located, what they do, and how they work;

  • Engine or motor operation;

  • Steering and maneuvering;

  • Visibility (including restrictions due to loading);

  • Fork and attachment adaptation, operation, and use limitations;

  • Vehicle capacity;

  • Vehicle stability;

  • Any vehicle inspection and maintenance that the operator will be required to perform;

  • Refueling and/or charging and recharging of batteries;

  • Operating limitations;

  • Any other operating instructions, warnings, or precautions listed in the operator's manual for the types of vehicle that the employee is being trained to operate.

WORKPLACE-RELATED TOPICS:

  • Surface conditions where the vehicle will be operated;

  • Composition of loads to be carried and load stability;

  • Load manipulation, stacking, and unstacking;

  • Pedestrian traffic in areas where the vehicle will be operated;

  • Narrow aisles and other restricted places where the vehicle will be operated;

  • Hazardous (classified) locations where the vehicle will be operated;

  • Ramps and other sloped surfaces that could affect the vehicle's stability;

  • Closed environments and other areas where insufficient ventilation or poor vehicle maintenance could cause a buildup of carbon monoxide or diesel exhaust;

  • Other unique or potentially hazardous environmental conditions in the workplace that could affect safe operation.

When is operator re-training required?

Operators must be periodically evaluated and receive "refresher training" whenever necessary. Refresher training is required if:

  1. the operator is involved in an accident or near-miss incident with a forklift,

  2. the operator has been observed operating a forklift in an unsafe manner,

  3. the operator has been determined in an evaluation to need additional training,

  4. there are changes in the workplace that could affect the safe operation of the forklift,

  5. the operator is assigned to a different type of forklift.

Retraining after some specific period of time will not be required if an employee is deemed by an evaluation to be competent to perform their duties. However, you are required to evaluate each operator's performance at least every three years to ensure that the employee is able to retain and use the knowledge and skills necessary to operate the truck.

Absolutely!  A must! we  requires that employers "certify" that the training and evaluations have been completed. The certification should include the name of the operator, the date of training, and identity of the trainer. It is recommended that employers retain training materials and, if the training was conducted by an outside consultant, the name and address of the trainer.

Are ORD Forklift's training products approved or certified by Dept. of Transportation Indonesia ?
